R.E.M., Hootie, and the Black Crowes Supergroup's Journey: Howl Owl Howl

Music Now

Darius Rucker, Mike Mills, and Steve Gorman, the supergroup Howl Owl Howl, have been quietly working on their album for the last five years. Despite the debut single 'My Cologne' being released, the album is not yet complete. However, they decided to go on tour, as they don't feel bound by rules at this stage in their careers. In a new episode of the Rolling Stone Music Now podcast, the trio discusses the album, their origins, and more.

It all started with a single text message. Steve Gorman recalls organizing a gig for his child's school fundraiser, and needing to assemble a band at the last minute. Darius Rucker texted him, suggesting they perform together. This led to the formation of Howl Owl Howl, with Michael Stipe's suggestion of the band name initially met with resistance. However, the name stuck, and the band's chemistry was evident.

The single 'My Cologne' was inspired by Ariana Grande's perfume launch, R.E.M., but Mills hopes she finds it humorous. The band members emphasize that they are not seeking to rebuild their careers or make money; they simply enjoy playing music.

There will be no R.E.M. reunion, as the band members recognized the natural end of their era. They played together for one song at the Songwriters Hall of Fame, but Mills clarifies that it was not a reunion. Hootie & the Blowfish's future is uncertain, with Rucker expressing a lack of enthusiasm for more tours. He prioritizes his solo country album and the satisfaction of working with a real band.

Mills also discusses his decision to abandon a solo record, citing his enjoyment of collaboration and the fun of creating music with friends. Howl Owl Howl will tour once the album is released, and the band members are confident in their future endeavors.
