Mark McGwire, the legendary baseball player, is back in the game, but this time as a special assistant to player development for the Athletics (A’s). This homecoming marks a significant return to the team where his career began, as he spent 12 seasons in Oakland, including the iconic 1989 World Series victory. McGwire, drafted 10th overall in 1984, quickly made his mark with 49 home runs in his rookie year, a record that stood for decades. His partnership with Jose Canseco, known as the "Bash Brothers," is one of the most memorable duos in baseball history.
However, McGwire's career took a controversial turn in 1997 when he was traded to the Cardinals. Here, he broke the single-season home run record, a feat that sparked a historic home run race with Sammy Sosa. Despite his on-field success, McGwire's legacy is marred by his involvement with performance-enhancing drugs, which has kept him out of the Baseball Hall of Fame. Yet, the A’s recognized his contributions by inducting him into their team Hall of Fame in 2019.
This isn't McGwire's first foray into coaching. He previously served as the hitting coach for the Cardinals and the Dodgers, and as the bench coach for the Padres.
