Imagine waking up one day with a staggering 50 million euros in your bank account. It's a scenario that sparks endless daydreams and, as the Estonian film New Money reveals, a whole host of unexpected challenges.
New Money, the latest feature from writer-director-producer Rain Rannu, is a comedic exploration of the dreams and nightmares that can accompany sudden wealth. It's a follow-up to Rannu's 2023 dramedy Free Money, and it asks a question that many of us have pondered: What would you do with such an astronomical sum?
The film premiered at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, drawing a packed audience and plenty of laughter. It stars Märt Pius and Steffi Pähn, who reprise their roles as the couple Taavi and Liisa from Free Money. The story follows their journey as humble teacher Liisa and modest IT expert Taavi find themselves in the spotlight after a tabloid interview, leading to a deluge of unwanted attention and offers.
"It's a bit like a cautionary tale," Rannu explains. "The film highlights the idea that with great wealth comes great responsibility and, often, great headaches." Indeed, the couple's newfound riches bring about a series of complications, including the attention of a con artist.
Rannu and his creative team shared some lighthearted stories from the filming process, including their experiences in Miami, which features prominently in the movie. "It was a very organic process," Rannu says of the film's development. "I wanted to spend more time with these characters, so I wrote a script and asked the actors if they were interested. They were on board, and the rest is history."
The filmmaker also discussed his role as co-editor, emphasizing the importance of editing in shaping a film's final product. "It's a crucial stage where you can really make or break the movie," he says. "The little details, the nuances—they all matter."
And what about the future of the Free Money and New Money universe? Rannu hints at the possibility of a third film, sharing, "There are a couple of good ideas floating around. We could explore the stories of two characters from the new movie in more depth."
So, as we ponder the potential for more adventures in this comedic world, we're left with a simple yet powerful takeaway: more money, more problems. But is it a price worth paying? That's a question for the audience to decide. Watch the trailer for New Money and join the debate!
