During a performance in Kathmandu, Nepal, Anjum was singing his diss track Kaun Talha, aimed at Indian rapper Naezy, when a fan threw an Indian flag onto the stage. Without hesitation, Anjum caught the flag mid-air, waved it, and draped it over his shoulders. The act went viral within minutes, but not for the reasons one might expect.
And this is the part most people miss: The gesture comes at a time when tensions between India and Pakistan are at an all-time high. Following the devastating Pahalgam terror attack in May 2025, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians, India launched Operation Sindoor, a military response targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan. The resulting four-day war led to a ban on Pakistani artists and their music across Indian platforms like Spotify, Instagram, and YouTube. In mid-2024, Naezy, a pioneer of India’s Gully Gang rap scene, dismissed Anjum with a casual ‘Kaun Talha?’ (Who is Talha?) during a podcast. Anjum, a prominent figure in Urdu rap and one half of the Karachi-based duo Young Stunners, took it personally. His diss track Kaun Talha was a direct, aggressive response, highlighting his achievements and dominance in South Asian rap.
Now, with the flag incident, the divide has only deepened. As one X user, Syed M Saad Ahsan, pointed out, ‘Talha Anjum is going to have a lot more than bottles thrown at him now.’ But Anjum remains unapologetic, insisting that Urdu rap is and will always be borderless.
