Penny Taylor: The Phoenix Mercury Star's Award-Winning Career (2026)

Ever wonder about the unsung heroes who almost reached the pinnacle of recognition? Penny Taylor, a phenomenal player for the Phoenix Mercury, is one such athlete. Before gracing the Mercury with her talents, she began her WNBA journey with the Cleveland Rockers, drafted in 2001. This marked the start of a career filled with impressive achievements and near misses.

Taylor's impact on the Phoenix Mercury was undeniable. She remained with the team until her retirement, a testament to her dedication and skill. During her tenure, she celebrated three championships, earned multiple All-Star selections, and even had her jersey retired – a true honor.

Throughout her career, Taylor consistently showcased her skills, leading to recognition in several award races.

In 2002, while playing for the Rockers, Taylor first received consideration for the Most Improved Player award. That season, she averaged an impressive 13.0 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.2 steals. Compared to her rookie season averages of 7.2 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and a steal, the improvement was clear.

Coco Miller, the sister of future Mercury player Kelly Miller, ultimately won the award that year, scoring 14 points. Taylor, however, tied for eighth place with two points, alongside Kamila Vodichkova, who would later also join the Mercury. This race also included Tangela Smith, Tamicha Jackson, and Kelly Miller, further highlighting the Mercury's presence.

The following season, Taylor's stats with the Mercury included 13.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.5 steals. She received three points in the Most Improved Player race, tying for sixth place. Wendy Palmer and Miller shared the award with nine points each.

But here's where it gets controversial... Despite her undeniable talent, Taylor never quite clinched the Most Improved Player award. In 2007, she was one of nine players to receive a point. Janel McCarville won that year. However, Taylor's contributions didn't go unnoticed. She was named to the All-WNBA First Team and helped the Phoenix Mercury win a championship.

Taylor's career is a testament to her skill and dedication, even without the individual accolades.
