Get ready for some hot MLB trade talk! The Red Sox outfield is a crowded place, and tough decisions are on the horizon. With a talented but congested outfield, the team must decide how to navigate the 2026 season.
Wilyer Abreu, Jarren Duran, Roman Anthony, and Ceddanne Rafaela make up Boston's outfield dream team. Each player brings unique skills, making rotation a challenging task. Abreu and Duran's names have been floating around in trade rumors, and this winter is no exception.
ESPN's Jeff Passan predicts a 50% chance of either of these outfielders being traded. Here's his take on Duran:
"The Red Sox value Duran as the seven-win player he was in 2024, but even his 2025 four-win version can instantly boost a team. Boston can hold out for a big return, as they're not under pressure to deal him. Eventually, though, the Sox will have to move Duran or Abreu. Keeping full-time-quality players for less than full-time roles is a risky strategy."
Passan suggests potential landing spots for Duran, including the Detroit Tigers, San Francisco Giants, and more. But here's where it gets controversial...
Passan also highlights Abreu's trade potential, stating:
"It's long been expected that either Duran or Abreu would be traded once Roman Anthony arrived. With Boston seeking big bats, either outfielder could fetch some much-needed pitching talent. Abreu, three years younger than Duran, has won back-to-back Gold Gloves and has four years of club control, justifying the high asking price."
Abreu's best fit, according to Passan, includes the Tigers, Giants, and other teams. In November, Passan reported that the Red Sox are "almost surely" going to trade either Duran or Abreu.
Duran's name popped up in trade rumors at the 2025 deadline, but Boston decided to keep him. He recently signed a $7.7 million contract to avoid arbitration.
Abreu, fresh off his second consecutive Gold Glove, is under team control until 2028.
Both outfielders have attracted interest from other teams. Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow confirmed that the Red Sox are open to trade discussions, setting a high bar for any potential deals.
"Teams have shown interest in our players, which isn't surprising given our position. We'll stay open-minded, but we're not settling for anything less than exceptional."
So, who will the Red Sox trade? Will it be Duran or Abreu? And what impact will this have on the team's strategy for the upcoming season? These are the questions on every fan's mind.
What do you think? Should the Red Sox trade either of these outfielders? Share your thoughts in the comments and let's discuss!
