Rutgers Football Faces a Defensive Overhaul After a Disappointing Season. Greg Schiano's key year, marred by a 5-7 record, has prompted significant changes within the Rutgers Scarlet Knights' coaching staff, as reported by FootballScoop.
Multiple sources confirm that Schiano has initiated a major shakeup on the defensive side of the ball, parting ways with co-defensive coordinators Robb Smith and Zach Sparber.
These moves come in the wake of Schiano's sixth consecutive season with six or more losses since his return to Rutgers. In fact, Schiano has accumulated 41 losses since 2020.
It's worth noting that Schiano had only just welcomed Smith and Sparber to the Scarlet Knights program in February of this year.
"I am excited by the opportunity to work with Robb again," Schiano said in a Rutgers release at the time of the hiring. "He is one of the most intelligent football coaches I have ever been around. In Zach, we are hiring a rising star in the profession, who has proven to be a great communicator. Together, I am confident they will lead our defense to new heights. We are thrilled to welcome them both back to New Jersey."
But here's where it gets controversial... Rutgers' defense struggled significantly, ranking 119th in scoring defense, allowing 31.83 points per game, and plummeting to 126th in total defense, giving up 432.8 yards per game.
These numbers represent a considerable decline from the success Smith and Sparber had previously achieved.
For instance, last season, Sparber helped James Madison achieve a nine-win season in head coach Bob Chesney's debut, with a defense ranked in the Top 25 in Football Bowls Subdivision play.
Smith returned to Rutgers for his third stint with the Scarlet Knights, having been hired by Schiano after a season as a senior defensive analyst in James Franklin's program.
Sparber, a New Jersey native, returned home with a decade of coaching experience, spanning high school to working under notable defensive minds in college football, including current Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko, a national coach of the year finalist, and former Virginia Tech defensive play-caller Bud Foster.
And this is the part most people miss... The upcoming 2026 season is shaping up to be pivotal for Schiano and Rutgers. This season, the Knights managed only two Big Ten Conference wins and added three additional victories against an Football Championship Subdivision foe in HBCU program Norfolk State, along with two Mid-American Conference wins against Ohio and Miami (Ohio).
Schiano's Scarlet Knights will kick off their 2026 season on September 5, 2026, against UMass. He earned $6.5 million this past season, with nearly $24 million remaining in buyout money, according to the USA Today Coaches' Salary Database.
