The Pont Neuf Cavern, a monumental installation by French street artist JR, has transformed the 17th-century Pont Neuf bridge in Paris into an artificial cavern. This immersive experience, free to enter until June 28, invites visitors to explore their senses. The installation features a unique smell, created by olfact expert Sarah Bouasse, that changes along the crossing, from wet earth and mineral dampness to something warmer, smokier, and faintly animal. A sound installation by Thomas Bangalter, formerly of Daft Punk, adds to the atmosphere with low rumbles, echoes, and pulses. The cavern also includes an augmented-reality experience, developed with tech company Snap, where digital bats trail light through the cave, and a dancer materializes in space. JR's work is a tribute to Christo and Jeanne-Claude's 1985 wrapping of the bridge in pale gold fabric, but instead of light, it sends visitors into darkness. The artist has linked the work to Plato's allegory of the cave, suggesting that today's cave walls are screens and algorithms that shape what people see. The fabric used in the installation will be reused or recycled when the cave closes, and the mountain will vanish, returning the bridge to its original state. This temporary transformation of a familiar crossing into an immersive experience raises questions about the power of art to alter our perception of the world and the role of technology in shaping our reality.
