Ubisoft's Revolutionary AI Game 'Teammates': The Future of Interactive Gaming? (2026)

Get ready, gamers! Ubisoft is diving headfirst into the future with "Teammates," a groundbreaking new game experience developed by the same team behind the upcoming "Neo NPC." This project promises to revolutionize how we interact with games, leveraging the power of generative AI to create more immersive and engaging experiences. But how exactly will this work? Let's dive in!

"Teammates" is currently undergoing a closed playtest with a select group of participants. This early prototype builds upon the foundation laid by "Neo NPC," which showcased impressive cognitive and natural language abilities in its AI characters. Now, these Non-Playable Characters (NPCs) are stepping into a more familiar environment: a first-person shooter.

According to Ubisoft, these AI-driven "Teammates" will be able to respond to real-time voice commands and adapt their behavior to each situation, showcasing unique personalities. Imagine characters that react naturally to your strategies, moods, and even your personal slang! They'll interpret your intent and tone, as well as environmental cues, to generate fluid, context-aware reactions, deepening immersion and player agency.

"It's really about experimenting with entirely new ways of creating interactive stories," says Virginie Mosser, the narrative director of the project. The goal is to give AI meaning and narrativize it, ensuring logic doesn’t replace soul. They designed 'Teammates' to leave space for player creativity, finding that balance between emotion and unpredictability.

The experience includes an in-game companion named "Jaspar," a personal assistant designed to support players throughout their missions. Jaspar will recognize you by name, help with onboarding, understand the game's lore, and highlight threats or key objects in the environment. He can also remind you of mission objectives, suggest next steps, and act as a tactical guide when you're unsure what to do next.

But here's where it gets controversial... Ubisoft's announcement of "Teammates" came shortly after the release of their latest quarterly earnings results, which were delayed due to a shift in accounting. They also announced a significant investment from Tencent, which will help cover recent expenses. Could this investment be related to the development of this new technology?

"Games of tomorrow will listen, understand and react to players far more than today," says Xavier Manzanares, Ubisoft's director of GenAI gameplay. "It’s the first time we’ve shared an experiment this early with players, but our goal is to pave the way with a strong technology layer so our creators can start imagining the value it could bring to their project and players."

Additionally, the "Teammates" division has built an Application Programming Interface (API) that "abstracts the complexity of generative systems, embeds necessary guardrails including hallucinations, bias, toxicity among others, and helps control its power to put it at the service of human creativity and play.” This API acts as an agnostic middleware for GenAI that can easily plug into Ubisoft's in-house game engines, Anvil and Snowdrop.

"We are making exciting progress in building the tools of tomorrow for our teams," says Yves Guillemot, Ubisoft's co-founder and CEO. "Creativity remains deeply human. AI provides tools that help bring creative visions to life in new ways, it can be a powerful enabler to create even more meaningful and immersive experiences for players."

And this is the part most people miss... "Teammates" is not just a game; it's an experiment. It's a testbed for the underlying technology, pushing the boundaries of what's possible with AI in gaming.
