In a joint statement, US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, former advisor to President Trump, along with Ukrainian negotiators, emphasized that any real progress towards a resolution hinges on Russia's willingness to commit to long-term peace. This includes concrete steps toward de-escalation and, crucially, an end to the ongoing violence.
During their meeting, the teams agreed on a framework for security arrangements and discussed deterrence strategies. However, talks in Moscow on Tuesday failed to yield a breakthrough in the nearly four-year-long war. This meeting marked the sixth round of discussions in just two weeks, with a follow-up scheduled for Saturday in Florida.
The primary goal for Ukraine, as stated by the four negotiators, is to secure a settlement that protects its independence and sovereignty, ensures the safety of its citizens, and establishes a stable foundation for a prosperous, democratic future. They also discussed the US's earlier meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, along with Ukraine's post-war future, including the country's reconstruction and economic initiatives with the US.
But here's where it gets controversial... Reaching a ceasefire and de-escalating tensions are seen as vital to preventing renewed aggression and enabling Ukraine's comprehensive redevelopment plan. This plan aims to make the nation stronger and more prosperous than before the war.
And this is the part most people miss... At least two major points of contention remain between Moscow and Kyiv: the fate of Ukrainian territory seized by Russian forces and the crucial issue of security guarantees for Ukraine. Witkoff spent nearly five hours in Moscow with Putin on Tuesday, but the Kremlin reported that no compromise was reached. Kushner, a businessman and real estate investor, was also present.
Former President Trump described the talks as "reasonably good," but cautioned that it was too early to predict the outcome. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed a sense of opportunity, stating that "the world clearly feels that there is a real opportunity to end the war," but stressed that negotiations must be "backed by pressure on Russia."
